ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO MARIA MAZZOLA known as PARMIGIANINO (1503 - 1540)
Self-portrait
Canvas
Old restorations, strip of canvas approx. 2 cm added at top
Empire period oak and gilded stucco frame (probably chosen by Vivant-Denon) bearing the name Parmesan and a N°61
Height 27 cm - Width 22.5 cm

Provenance :
Collection Dominique Vivant Denon (1747 - 1825).
Engraved by Valentin with the title: Tiré du cabinet de M. Denon (M. Mussini, Parmigianino tradotto, Cinisello
Balsamo [Milano], 2003, pp. 195-96, no. 400).

This canvas can be related to two works by Parmesan: the drawing with profile portrait (Vienna, Albertina) and the figure of Saint Joseph in the "Mariage mystique de sainte Catherine" (Louvre, department of paintings).

Our painting comes from the prestigious collection that Dominique Vivant Denon (1747-1825), diplomat, archaeologist, artist and first director of the Louvre, meticulously and passionately assembled throughout his life, which included antique sculptures, Italian Renaissance paintings, Egyptian objets d'art, as well as rare engravings and drawings. A great traveler accompanying the imperial armies, he brought back numerous artifacts from his expeditions, notably the Egyptian campaign, which fueled the West's fascination with the Orient. These acquisitions enriched both the collections of the Louvre and his own private collection, and it is through his blend of scientific and aesthetic curiosity that his cabinet illustrates the encyclopedic spirit of his era.
