A student of Zuber, Larteau and Petitjean, Léon Barotte began his career as a decorator, then, on the advice of patron Eugène Corbin, turned to painting in 1908. From 1912 onwards, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, becoming a member. He also exhibited landscapes at the Salon des indépendants between 1926 and 1930. A major retrospective of his work was held in 1936 at the Galerie Thiébault in Nancy.
