André Bauchant was a self-taught naive painter. Mobilized during the First World War, he learned to draw landscapes and reliefs with precision and rigor, revealing a talent of which he was not yet aware. In 1921, he sent sixteen paintings to the Salon d'Automne; nine were accepted. It was during this first participation that painter Amédée Ozenfant and architect Le Corbusier noticed his naïve, poetic painting; they were to become his first buyers and friends. His works are held in numerous public collections.
