A pupil of William Bouguereau, Chas-Laborde was a prolific draftsman, contributing illustrations to numerous magazines of his day. He also produced advertising designs and theater sets. After his death, Marcel Aymé paid tribute to him, saying he was "one of the greatest illustrators of our time, and perhaps the greatest".
