CLAUDE VIALLAT (BORN IN 1936) Untitled, 2000 Acrylic on loose canvas Dated on a business card stapled to the work: 2000/,numbered: 23/35,000 frs In a cardboard box signed by the artist and marked: année 2000 Small tears at top edge Height. 161 cm - W. 77 cm ` An emblematic figure of the French avant-garde, Claude Viallat is one of the founders of the Supports/Surfaces movement, which in the late 1960s renewed the relationship with painting by deconstructing its traditional foundations. Rejecting the stretcher frame, he favors loose canvases, sheets and tarpaulins, which he covers with a repeated biomorphic motif, a kind of organic sign that has become his signature. His radical approach questions the very materiality of the work, the pictorial gesture, the support and the color. The work we present, acquired directly from the artist and painted on fabric, perfectly embodies this free, sensual and rhythmic approach. Through the repetition of the motif, the vibration of the color and the assumed modesty of the material, Viallat composes a pictorial language that is autonomous, open and profoundly alive. Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist in his Nîmes studio.
