Raymond Woog studied with symbolist painter Gustave Moreau at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris. In 1903, he was one of the exhibitors at the first Salon d'Automne, where he was noticed by art critics Arsène Alexandre and Raymond Bouyer, the latter writing in La Revue Bleue on November 14, 1903: "There are twenty-six pupils of Gustave Moreau, all of them interesting, from the cameos of Paul Baignières to the travel notes of Raymond Woog"[1].
The famous critic Camille Mauclair also had this to say about him: "For several years now, this young painter has been revealing himself with a singular flavor, and imposing himself through his work, his will and his frankness. We follow him without disappointment. In addition to a charming study, he shows here a large effigy of a woman on a gold lacquer screen background, with a rich, spirited coloring, and a portrait of the famous cellist Pablo Casals. I think the latter painting is almost a masterpiece, both in execution and in the patient synthesis of psychological character."
