Established in the second half of the 19th century, and bought by Aristide Bruant in 1913, it was one of the favorite meeting places of the artistic bohemia of the early 20th century, from Max Jacob to Pablo Picasso, via Roland Dorgelès, Francis Carco, Blaise Cendrars and Pierre Mac Orlan; later, in the 1940s-50s, it was frequented by Jean-Roger Caussimon and François Billetdoux, among others. Between 1879 and 1880, the cabaret's then-owner commissioned caricaturist André Gill, who was familiar with the place, to create a sign. Gill painted a rabbit wearing a green frock coat, a red scarf and a three-bridged cap, escaping on the point of one leg from the saucepan intended for him, balancing a bottle of wine on one hand: the cabaret became known as Au Lapin à Gill, soon transformed into Lapin Agile. Since the turn of the century, a copy of Gill's sign has replaced it. Over time, the "Lapin à Gill" became the "Lapin Agile", the name with which the cabaret is still known today. In our work, the sign is suggested by the artist on the monochrome façade.
