Son of engraver Jean Duvivier of the Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture and friend of Jean-Siméon Chardin, with whom he learned the trade, Thomas Germain Joseph Duvivier exhibited for the first time at the "Exposition de la Jeunesse" in Place Dauphine, where his talent was already recognized. His favorite subject is the still life, in which he almost systematically integrates a sculpture. His work follows in the footsteps of his master Chardin. Each element of the composition has its rightful place and conveys meaning.
His personality was studied by Michel and Fabrice Faré in La Vie silencieuse en France au XVIIIe siècle, Fribourg, 1976.
