He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he associated with the Impressionists. He devoted himself to depicting French peasant life; his glass-enclosed studio allowed him to work throughout all seasons and to study the different phases of the day and their impact on the environment. Inspired by fields, nature, and the work of peasant women, his works place particular emphasis on the realistic depiction of the landscape. He was awarded the Silver Medal and the Cross of the Legion of Honor at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair.
