A landscape painter operating on the fringes of the Academy and official events, Louis-Gabriel Moreau carried on the tradition of Dutch Golden Age landscape painting while adapting it to the new sensibility emerging in the 18th century, combining views of ruins with atmospheric effects. He thus belongs to the pre-Romantic movement developed by late 18th-century landscape painters such as Hubert Robert and Pierre-Jacques Volaire.
