In-8°, green morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges (Arnaud - Marius Michel doreur). Fourth edition, despite the mention of "Fifth Edition" on the title & FIRST ISSUE. 425 illustrations by Gustave DORÉ. Our copy contains two of the four characteristics of the first printing noted by Carteret (p. XXI is paginated XX, and p. 425 is captioned "Ha esté imprimé pour la prime foys a Paris et achevé en mars MDCCCXXXVII", without the signature 36). However, the caption of the engraving on p. 326 "Le Ioyeulx curé de Meudon" has been restored, and the Table on p. 426 contains the title of the ninth tale entitled "Naifveté".
