Books and Manuscripts
Throughout history, ancient books and manuscripts have fascinated us with their ability to span the centuries while preserving the words, images, and ideas of those who created them. At Libert & Associés, this specialty encompasses a rich and varied field, spanning more than six centuries of the history of books and writing.
From medieval illuminated manuscripts—true masterpieces of patience and artistry—to autograph letters from authors and historical figures, and including incunabula from the late 15th century, each piece bears witness to an era and exceptional craftsmanship. Added to these treasures are modern and contemporary literary and artistic works, illustrating the constant evolution of the art of the book.
This specialty also highlights an exceptional craft: that of the fine bookbinder. Carrying on a long tradition, the bookbinder transforms each volume into a unique object where leather, gold, and gilding tell another story—that of craftsmanship and the care taken with precious books.
Among our most notable achievements is a rare volume by Isidore Stanislas Helman, *Les Faits mémorables des Empereurs de la Chine* (Memorable Deeds of the Emperors of China), published between 1783 and 1786. Bound in red morocco leather, this extremely rare volume included three exceptional sets of engravings based on drawings by Attiret, commissioned by the Emperor of China. It sold for €33,280, underscoring the enduring interest in these exceptional pieces.
Another constantly expanding segment is that of comic books, where albums, original art pages, and merchandise evoke nostalgia and admiration among collectors. From timeless heroes like Tintin, Asterix, Gaston Lagaffe, and Spirou to modern creators such as Jean Giraud (Moebius) and Enki Bilal, original art pages regularly fetch spectacular prices at auction. The growing interest in first editions in pristine condition confirms the vitality of this market.
