CONFERENCE: PARIS & THE TREASURES OF THE QUEENS OF SPAIN

A conversation between Pauline Libert, who represents the third generation of our house, and Vincent Meylan during the lecture on the sale of the treasures of the Queens of Spain held at the Hôtel Drouot in 1878.

Forced into exile in 1868, Isabella II settled in Paris with one of the world’s most significant jewelry collections. Ten years later, she entrusted the sale of the collection to the Hôtel Drouot. A year later, it was the turn of her mother’s collection—that of Queen Marie-Christine—to be sold at the same venue. From these two sales, several gemstones would go on to follow a unique journey, from Saint Petersburg to Hollywood.

Paris has been selling jewelry since the Middle Ages: the oldest auction recorded in the national archives is that of the jewels of Queen Clementia of Hungary, on October 13, 1328. In 1786, the collections and inventory of two Crown jewelers, Messrs. Jacquemin and Aubert, went under the hammer.

This evening’s event will situate the 1878 sale within this long tradition and shed light on what it still tells us about today’s market.
